Virtualization is a component of the NIST cloud computing infrastructure (IaaS). Virtualization is the creation of virtual assets, whether hardware platforms, operating systems, storage devices, or network resources.
Virtualization originated with the operating system, as datacenters looked for ways to optimize resources, reduce energy consumption, and lower configuration management costs through imaging. Virtualization has evolved, providing virtual applications, deployment packages, and tighter integration with the application layer.
